The George Mason University men's soccer team (2-2-1) engaged in a defensive showdown with Monmouth (4-1-1) on Wednesday afternoon on The Great Lawn in West Long Branch, N.J., earning a scoreless draw with the Hawks after neither team scored in 110 minutes of play.
The shutout is the second of the season for the Patriots, who also held Howard without a goal in the first match of the season on Aug. 31. Monmouth has registered four shutouts this season. With the draw, the Hawks' home unbeaten streak increased to 13 matches.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Kelley earned the 13th shutout of his two-year career, turning away three shots, including one in the second overtime. Monmouth's Daniel Schenkel made one save in net for the Hawks and was saved by teammate Ryan Kinne in the first overtime, when Kinne cleared a ball off the line after a corner kick service.
George Mason held a slight 6-5 edge in shots in the match, as midfielder Ernesto Marquez fired three shots. Monmouth forward Tom Gray recorded three shots to lead the Hawks. The Patriots also held a slim advantage in corner kicks, taking seven to the Hawks' five.
Mason will play its third consecutive road match on Saturday, Sept. 22, traveling to Richmond, Va. to face the University of Richmond in a 7 p.m. match.
