Hartford, Conn. -
The George Mason women's soccer team opened the 2007 season on Friday afternoon in Hartford, Conn. and the Patriots were unable to extend their unbeaten streak from last season in to the new one as Mason fell at the hands of Rider, 2-0. The Patriots will play Harvard on Sunday at 11 a.m. in the Hartford Tournament.
The first half saw the teams play to a scoreless tie. Mason had six shots in the period while Rider was limited to just one, with Kasey Davenport making the stop. The second period saw the Broncos break through early and both goals came within five minutes of each other.
Lauren Musumeci scored the first goal without an assist when she took a shot from the left side and put it just inside the far right post. A little more than four minutes later, Kara Perkoski took a shot which required a diving save from Davenport. But the ball rebound out in front of the net and Musumeci put the ball in for the 2-0 final score.
Mason took twice as many shots as Rider in the game, 11-5, but Alex Post made saves on all five shots on goal to earn the shutout. The Patriots will look to even their record at 1-1 when they face Harvard on Sunday.
