WASHINGTON, D.C. - In their second match of the season, the 2007 George Mason women's volleyball team was unable to overcome a powerful attack by American University as the Eagles defeated the Patriots, 3-0, on Saturday morning in the third match of the D.C. Volleyball Challenge.
The Eagles (2-0) used a .358-to-.152 attack advantage in the match to score their second victory of the season. Meanwhile, the Patriots (1-1), who came within two points in the second game, could not outlast the Eagles as they opened the match-deciding game on a 7-0.
After that advantage, the Patriots closed within four at 10-6, but AU's fervent attack netted a 16-9 lead. From there, Mason again cut the lead to four points at 16-12. American answered right back with a 14-5 run, sealed with a Christina Nash service ace to earn the victory.
Mason was led by senior Jaqueline Kohler and sophomore Laura Turner, who each recorded nine kills. Freshman setter Fernanda Bartels notched 25 digs for the Patriots, while sophomore Rebecca Walter chipped in eight kills and three service aces.
American's attack was led by Rubena Sukaj, who recorded a game-high 19 kills. Joining her in double-figure kills was Claire Recht, who recorded 10 in addition to her four total blocks.
