Fairfax, Va.--Two former Mason men's soccer players in Rich Kotschau and Sam Sumo, along with Dr. Richard "Doc" Resnick, were all inducted into Mason's Men's Soccer Hall of Fame this past weekend as announced by head coach Greg Andrulis. All three were honored, along with award winners from the 2006 squad, at the annual soccer banquet on April 21 on the campus of George Mason.
Rich Kotschau (1993, 95-97)
Kotschau was a four year starter for George Mason, beginning with the 1993 season and then from 1995-97. Kotschau still holds the all-time school career record in games played with a total of 84.
During his senior season, Kotschau was named to the All-CAA and All-Virginia First Teams, and was also a third-team choice for the All-South Atlantic Region. Kotschau was selected as an All-American honorable mention and finished the season as the ninth-best defender in the nation, according to Soccer News.
In 1996, Kotschau earned All-Virginia First Team honors and was named to the All-CAA First Team a year earlier.
During the summer before his junior season, he was selected to train with the United States Olympic team. In addition, Kotschau had the opportunity to train with U.S. National "A", "B" and under-21 teams after his senior campaign.
Kotschau became the first Mason player to be selected in the Major League Soccer (MLS) collegiate draft when he was the second overall pick in the first round in 1998 by the expansion Chicago Fire, who went on to win the MLS championship that year. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Mutiny in 1999, to the Colorado Rapids in 2001 and most recently played for the Columbus Crew.
Sam Sumo (1985-87)
Sumo played for the Patriots from 1985-87 in the forward position. Sumo's senior season was cut short due to an injury. But in his junior season, the Patriots ended with a 13-5-3 overall record and a 5-1-1 mark in CAA play to finished third among conference foes. Mason earned its fourth-straight berth in the NCAA Championship tournament and finished the season ranked 13th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America.
For the second-straight year, Sumo led his teammates in goals with 10 in 1986 and he also dished out a team-best five assists.
During his first season with the Patriots, Sumo shattered Mason's single season scoring record, putting 24 goals into the net, and this record still stands to this day. Another record Sumo holds is that he is tied with five other Patriots for most points earned in a game (8) after he scored four goals against Tennessee on Sept. 1, 1985.
Dr. Richard "Doc" Resnick
Dr. Resnick has been doctor at Mason since 1979. Dr. Resnick began to increase his involvement with the soccer program under Richard Broad. When Gordon Bradley started coaching at Mason, Dr. Resnick's duties increased, including traveling with the team. He was also traveling with the men's basketball team, but by 1984 his travel was limited to men's soccer. He also spent time in the training room seeing all of the student athletes.
Dr. Resnick received his bachelor's degree from the City College of New York, his post graduate degree at the New York Medical School of Podiatric Medicine and then did his residency in sports medicine at Vasser Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Dr. Resnick is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., but now resides in Clifton, Va. with his wife, Alice. Their daughter Tracy is a graduate of Indiana, while the oldest daughter, Jaime graduated from Penn State.
The Men's Soccer Hall of Fame was introduced by Andrulis last season. These three individuals joins last year's class of former head coach Gordon Bradley (1985-2000), Mike Reynolds (1982-85), Fred Thompson (1982-85), Tamir Linhart (1991-93), Eduardo Lima (1996-2000), Denis Hamlett (1989-91) and Martin Dunphy (1986-89).
