George Mason (5-3, 3-2 EIVA Tait) swept host Rutgers-Newark (2-11, 0-5 EIVA Tait) in three games during the opening evening of play in The Golden Dome Classic in Newark, N.J. on Saturday.
Sophomore outside hitter Kyle Gramit (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) had a match-high 18 kills on .519 hitting and added five block assists as George Mason downed the host Scarlet Raiders, 30-24, 30-28, 30-24 in the nightcap.
Senior outside hitter Eric Honsberger (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) paced Rutgers-Newark with a dozen kills and eight digs while sophomore opposite Kenny Rienecker (Glendale, N.Y./Academy of American Studies) added 10 kills, an ace and two block assists.
The Patriots also got 15 kills from redshirt junior outside hitter Mark Burik (Glendale, N.Y./St. Francis Prep). Freshman middle blocker Colton Naill (York, Pa./Central York) had three of George Mason's five aces and added four kills and six block assists.
In the opening match of the tournament, senior middle hitter Jeremy Barndt (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) hit .550 with a dozen kills and just one error on 20 swings as Juniata swept past NJIT, 30-26, 30-27, 30-26.
George Mason takes on NJIT tomorrow at 5 p.m. before Rutgers-Newark faces Juniata in an EIVA Tait match at 7 p.m. to close out the tournament. The Star Ledger - NJ.com MVP will be awarded following the final match.
