Box Score

Charleston, S.C. - The George Mason baseball team once again got strong starting pitching from Mike Modica but the defense wasn't up to the task as Mason committed three errors and surrendered eight unearned runs as the Patriots fell at College of Charleston, 9-3.

Modica, who limited Clemson to one run on one hit in six innings last week held the Cougars to just two earned runs in four and two-third innings. But Charleston managed eight hits and scored eight runs in that stretch, including a six-run third. Kris Mengle allowed just two hits in two and one-third innings of relief as well as one unearned run. T.J. O'Grady made his collegiate debut and pitched a scoreless/hitless inning.

The Cougars got seven innings from Jeff Beliveay who allowed two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. Jason Bour provided the punch for Mason with a two-run homer in the second inning. He was 2 for 4 in the game. That put Mason ahead 2-0 before nine unanswered runs by Charleston. In the eighth, Mason got its final run as Chris Fournier doubled and later scored when Scott Krieger's grounder to third resulted in a Charleston throwing error. Chris Romanow had to hits in the game.

The Patriots will look to rebound from the loss when they take the field on Saturday at Charleston Southern. That game is slated for 1 p.m.
