FAIRFAX, Va. - With postseason implications on the line, the George Mason women's volleyball team returns home for its final weekend of action in the 2007-08 regular season on Friday and Saturday, as the Patriots host Northeastern and Hofstra on consecutive nights at 7 p.m. at the Field House.
Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for youth and senior citizens, and can be purchased at the Field House on the day of the event.
Mason enters the weekend with a 14-10 record, and 7-5 in the conference. Last weekend, the Patriots dropped two decisions, a 3-2 match at Towson and a sweep at Delaware. Earlier this season, the Patriots traveled to Hofstra and Northeastern and came away with a pair of wins. After that weekend, sophomore Rebecca Walter was named CAA Player of the Week following her efforts on the weekend, in which she averaged 17.5 kills and 11 digs. Hofstra now leads the all-time series 12-8, while Northeastern leads 5-2 over the Patriots.
Walter leads the Patriot offense with 354 kills on the season, while senior Jaqueline Kohler trails close behind with 347. Kohler has reached double figures in kills 19 times already this season, and has recorded 12 double-doubles, while Walter has hit double figures 21 times. Coming into the week, Mason was third in the CAA in hitting percentage and first in blocks, while Kohler and Walter were ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, in the conference in kills. Junior Jourdan Dozier leads the conference with 1.30 blocks per game, while freshman Fernanda Bartels is ranked fifth in the league in assists per game.
Pending the results of Thursday night's VCU-Delaware match, the Patriots may know their postseason fate prior to taking the court on Friday. Should VCU lose either of its two matches this weekend, or Mason pick up at least one victory, the Patriots will be assured of a spot in next weekend's six-team CAA Championship.
Saturday's match marks the final home contest for three Mason seniors, as Melissa Kryfka, Kristen Byler, and Jaqueline Kohler will be honored prior to the start of the match.
