The George Mason women's soccer team was able to salvage its first Colonial Athletic Association road trip of the year on Sunday afternoon as the Patriots took a 2-1 win over Georgia State on Sunday afternoon to improve to 6-5-0 on the year, 2-2-0 in CAA play.
Georgia State (6-5-0, 1-3-0) jumped on the scoreboard just nine minutes into the match when Nathalie Carter went one-on-one with Mason goalkeeper Kasey Davenport and found an open spot in the right side of the net to put the Panthers up 1-0. Mason found Georgia State's defense staunch over the remainder of the period as Panther goalkeeper Charlotte Vargo recorded a pair of saves in the period.
George Mason was able to find the equalizing goal 31 minutes into the second half as senior midfielder L.J. Williams found sophomore midfielder Leslie Cabe and Cabe's shot ricocheted in off the crossbar to tie the match. For awhile, it appeared as if overtime was in the cards but Mason mounted an attack in the 85th minute and the result was a Georgia State defender deflecting in a Sasha Vido shot for a 2-1 Patriot lead. Cabe was credited with the assist.
For Vido, a sophomore, it was her first goal of the season. Davenport finished with two saves on three shots on goal while Vargo finished with three saves on five shots on goal.
Mason will return to action on Friday when the Patriots host Delaware (5-6-0, 1-3-0) at 7 p.m.
