After winning their Colonial Athletic Association opener against UNC Wilmington on Friday, the George Mason men's soccer team was unable to find its rhythm on Sunday against Georgia State, falling to the Panthers by a final score of 3-0 at George Mason Stadium. With the loss, the Patriots drop to 4-4-1 on the season, and 1-1-0 in conference matches.
With the win, Georgia State improves its record to 4-4-1, with a 1-1-0 mark in conference play. The duo of junior Joe Devito and graduate student Floreal Pedrazo accounted for all of the Panthers' goals in the victory, with Devito finding the back of the net twice and Pedrazo scoring once. Both Devito and Pedrazo recorded assists in the match.
Trailing 1-0, the Patriots had their best scoring opportunity in the 54th minute of play when senior Adam Lobene blasted a shot in front of the goal that appeared to be headed for the back of the net. Georgia State defender Javon Carrington appeared out of nowhere to get a leg on the ball, making an acrobatic stop to keep Mason off of the scoreboard.
Goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho played all 90 minutes for Georgia State, making two stops. Sophomore Sean Kelley played the first half for Mason before being relieved by redshirt junior Jeremy Jessup, who made his first appearance of the 2007 season, playing the entire second half.
George Mason hits the road for its next match, traveling to Newark, Del. on Friday, Oct. 12 to take on CAA foe Delaware at 7 p.m. at Delaware Mini-Stadium. The Fightin' Blue Hens are currently 1-7-1 overall and 1-1-0 in CAA matches.
