HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Three George Mason players reached double figures in kills to power the Patriots women's volleyball team past Hofstra, 3-1 (25-30, 30-28, 30-27, 30-28), in Colonial Athletic Association action Friday evening at the Physical Fitness Center. Defensively, freshman Fernanda Bartels set a pair of season highs with 58 assists and 19 digs. With the first game tied at 15, the Pride began an 8-1 scoring run which set the stage for its game one victory. Mason fought back quickly in the second game, as a kill by Dozier gave the Patriots a 17-16 lead, one they would not relinquish for the rest of the game as they evened the match at one game apiece.
Mason found its game-changing scoring barrage again at the middle of the third game, when it broke open a 17-17 contest with six straight points. Hofstra fought to within one point when a block left the score at 28-27, but two points by the Patriots gave them the 2-1 lead.
The fourth game saw much of the same for the Patriots, with a close start giving way to an impressive Mason scoring run. Leading by as many as seven points at 27-20, the Pride worked its way back into the game, tying the contest at 28. Back-to-back kills by Walter and Turner sealed Hofstra's fate, however, as the Patriots put the finishing touches on their second straight victory.
Mason will continue its road weekend Sunday when it travels to Northeastern. First serve against the Huskies is set for 1 p.m.
