The George Mason men's soccer team opened up Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday evening and the Patriots got things started strong as Mason rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 win over UNC Wilmington. Mason improved to 4-3-1 on the year while UNC Wilmington dropped to 1-6-1.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. Daniel Roberts played a beautiful cross from the right side and he found the head of Allen Lomax. Situated on the left side of the box, Lomax drove the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
It didn't take Mason long to find the equalizer. Fewer than two minutes later, UNC Wilmington attempted to clear a ball deep in its third but it ricocheted and Irvin Martinez got behind the defense and to the ball first. He took the ball right and then shot left into the bottom corner of the net to make it 1-1. It was his second goal of the season.
The Patriots were able to take a lead into the half thanks to a timely corner kick in the 27th minute. Ernesto Marquez took the corner from the right side and he found the foot of Eric Zuehsow right in front of the net. Zuehsow's first goal of the year put the Patriots ahead 2-1.
Sean Kelley had three saves in the match as did UNC Wilmington keeper Brock Duckworth. The Seahawks were limited to four shots on goal while Mason had five. Mason will return to action on Sunday when the Patriots host Georgia State at 1 p.m. UNC Wilmington travels to Towson for a Sunday match.
