Senior volleyball player Jaqueline Kohler and freshman soccer player Fro Adu each performed exceptionally well in the early parts of their respective seasons and for their efforts, the pair was named the inaugural George Mason Female and Male Athletes of the Month, respectively. The award covers action from September and the few August contests in which the athletes participated.
Kohler, an outside hitter, has continued her outstanding career so far this season. The native of Curitiba, Brazil is averaging a double-double this season with 14.8 kills and 11.4 digs per match. A second team All-CAA honoree a year ago, Kohler currently sits fourth in the CAA in points per game with 4.57.
Kohler earned All-Tournament honors in each of the four weekend tourneys the Patriots participated in, including the USF Best Western Invitational in which she recorded a season-high 22 kills against the host Bulls. She has reached double-figure kills in all but two matches this season, and most recently set a new career best with eight total blocks in Saturday's 3-0 win over Towson. In her career, Kohler has tallied 1,167 kills, 76 aces, 833 digs and 127 total blocks.
Adu, a midfielder, has made an immediate impact on the field, starting all seven matches the Patriots have played and leading the team in goals (3), points (6) and game-winning goals (2).
The Rockville, Md. native wowed the home crowd at George Mason Stadium in his first match on Aug. 31 at the Adidas D.C. College Cup, scoring two goals in a span of 8:33 in the second half to lead Mason to a 3-0 victory over Howard. As a result of his performance at the season-opening tournament, Adu was named to the 2007 Adidas D.C. College Cup All-Tournament Team, and also earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 4.
Adu found the back of the net again in the Patriots' home victory over Bowling Green on Sept. 7, scoring in the 14th minute to help Mason cruise to a 3-1 win over the Falcons.
The Mason Male and Female Athlete of the Month Award will be awarded every month through the end of May.
