Fairfax, VA (October 23, 2007) - George Mason University, through Leffler Sports has signed a 3-year deal with Clear Channel radio to broadcast the Patriots Men's basketball games throughout the Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. metropolitan area. WTNT-AM (570) will be the prime media outlet and approximately 20% of the Patriots contests will be heard on "SportsTalk 980" WTEM-AM.
"There are a lot of sports teams and programs in the DC area and the majority looks to Clear Channel's SportsTalk 980 and 570 as the prime placement for sports programming. We are happy to associate ourselves with the longtime sports station and excited about their commitment to us with a multi-year deal," commented George Mason University athletic director Tom O'Connor. Dave Pugh, President/Market Manager of Clear Channel Broadcasting said, "We are delighted to have George Mason in our sports line-up, especially with the growing national success of the CAA. The Leffler Agency's broadcast subsidiary, Leffler Sports, negotiated and arranged the multi-year commitment. "This is the kind of deal that an exciting and growing sports property like Mason basketball deserves," agency president, Bob Leffler stated. "Clear Channel understands sports and has a long reputation of live game broadcast excellence."
Mason basketball fans will have the opportunity to listen to weekly interviews all season with head coach, Jim Larranaga on WTEM-AM's "Sports Reporters" program.
The play-by-play and analyst talent for each radio broadcast are Bill Rohland and Ric Wilson. Rohland will be in his ninth season with the Patriots and his third doing play-by-play. He served as color analyst for the Patriots for six seasons. Wilson is returning for his second season with Mason serving as color analyst. Wilson played at Mason from 1982-86 and the Patriots had a 74-42 record during his time on the court.
The broadcast schedule begins Friday, November 9 at 7 p.m. when the team opens the 2007-08 season at home in the Patriot Center against Vermont. In addition, the complete broadcast content of all George Mason basketball games will be available on the Internet at the official website of George Mason athletics, GoMason.com.
