Box Score

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason men's soccer team (5-6-1, 2-3-0 CAA) took a 1-0 lead late in the first half but were unable to hold on, falling to first-place Old Dominion (8-4-1, 5-0-0 CAA) by a final score of 2-1 on Friday evening at George Mason Stadium.

The Patriots had hopes of ending the Monarchs' five match-winning streak when they took a one-goal lead with 11 seconds remaining in the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Kelley kicked the ball the length of the field and ODU goalkeeper Evan Newton came out to grab the ball in traffic. However, the ball went right through Newton's hands and a streaking Chris Chaves kicked it into the open net for his second goal of the season, giving Mason a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Old Dominion got the equalizer in the 50th minute of play when midfielder A.J. Kulp knocked the ball into the left side of the net past the outstretched arms of Kelley. It was Kulp's second goal of the season.

Midfielder Trevor Banks scored the game-winning goal for the Monarchs in the 77th minute of play off of a penalty kick. Kelley dove to his right but Banks sent the ball sailing above him into the middle of the net for the goal.

Kelley finished the night with eight saves, with six coming in the first half. Newton tallied four saves for ODU. The Monarchs, winners of six straight, remain tied with Drexel for first place in the CAA. The Dragons downed Georgia State 1-0 on Friday afternoon.

George Mason will attempt to snap its two-match skid when it takes the field on Sunday at 2 p.m. against William and Mary at George Mason Stadium. The Tribe enter the match with a 6-6-2 overall record and a 3-2-0 mark in CAA matches after Friday's 1-0 loss to Towson.
