EDMONTON, Alberta - After winning its first two matches against Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) opponents, George Mason closed out the 12th Annual Husky Energy Can-Am Men's Volleyball Challenge with losses in its final two matches to wrap up the three-day tournament with a 2-2 overall record.
After defeating both Trinity Western and the University of Calgary to open up the tournament with a 2-0 record, the Patriots dropped matches to the University of Alberta Golden Bears and the McMaster Marauders. Mason suffered a three-game defeat to the University of Alberta (17-25, 16-25, 19-25) before dropping a four-game decision to McMaster (25-22, 21-25, 16-25, 16-25).
Both the NCAA participants and their Canadian counterparts were deadlocked in total matches won with eight after the three days of action concluded. However, the CIS won the 12th Annual Husky Energy Can-Am Men's Volleyball Challenge by virtue of more games won (30-29) than the NCAA schools.
Alberta setter Brock Pehar was named the CIS MVP, while Paul Carroll of the Pepperdine Waves was named the NCAA MVP. George Mason's Kyle Gramit was named to the 12th Annual Husky Energy Can-Am Men's Volleyball Challenge All-Star Team. Gramit led the Patriots in kills at the tournament with 50, for an average of 3.57 per game. He also served four aces and finished with 13 digs and six blocks.
