PHILADELPHIA -
Drexel (7-2-2, 4-0-0 CAA) scored an early goal and made it stand for the rest of the match as George Mason (5-5-1, 2-2-0 CAA) took a tough 1-0 loss in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field in Philadelphia, Pa. With the win, the improved Dragons' squad set a school-record for most conference wins since joining the CAA with four.
Drexel took an early lead in the 10th minute of play when Andrew Stolle played a ball off a Patriots' defender to earn a corner kick as it crossed the end line. Anthony Bafile served the ensuing corner kick to the far side of the goal box where Mark Stevenson charged in for a header that found its way into the net on the left side for his first career goal, giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Kelley made a great save in the 24th minute to keep Drexel from extending its lead. Bafile chased down a ball that fought its way through the defense, gathered it inside the box and blasted a shot that Kelley dove to take off his foot. Kelley played all 90 minutes and made three saves in the match.
Freshman forward Parker Walton blasted one last shot into the box in the final minute but his offering spun wide left and Mason was unable to regain possession.
The Patriots return home to George Mason Stadium on Friday, Oct. 19 to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs in a CAA match slated for 7 p.m.
