EDMONTON, Alberta - The George Mason men's volleyball team won its second straight match at the 12th Annual Husky Energy Can-Am Challenge, winning a five-set decision (22-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-27, 16-14) over the University of Calgary Dinos during the second day of action at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The Patriots' win boosts the NCAA's record to 4-1 at this year's event as Calgary drops to 0-2 thus far while George Mason is a perfect 2-0.
Scott Price, the Dinos' lone fifth year, helped Calgary out to a 25-22 first-set win and was solid defensively all night with five digs adding to his eight kills. Price was named the Player of the Match for Calgary.
The Patriots stormed back in the second and third games, torching the young Dinos for nine- and four-point wins, respectively.
The teams see-sawed in the fourth game, trading points over and over again, with neither team taking a substantial lead and running with it. In the end, the Dinos simply outlasted the Patriots, winning in extra points, 27-25.
Despite holding a 14-12 lead in the fifth, the Dinos could not put away the resilient Patriots, blowing the match point serve into the net. George Mason made Calgary pay for the service error, grabbing the lead off big kills from Hudson Bates and killer serves from Kyle Gramit. George Mason eventually won on a block 16-14.
George Mason's Player of the Match, Bates, smashed 15 kills, while Gramit put down a match-high 19. Gramit also added three aces as the Patriots picked up seven as a team.
Omar Langford led Calgary in kills with 17, while freshman Graham Vigrass posted 12.
