The George Mason women's soccer team played a see-saw match with Delaware on Friday night at George Mason Stadium and in the end, the Blue Hens stole the road win, beating the Patriots 3-2 in front of 870 fans. The Blue Hens scored twice in the second half, including in the final minute to drop Mason to 6-6-0, 2-3-0 in CAA play. Delaware improved to 6-6-0, 2-3-0. Emily Sammis had a goal and two assists for Delaware.
Delaware jumped out to a lead in only the 10th minute as Amy Pickard got past the Mason defense on the right side. She crossed to Emily Sammis on the left side and she one-timed the ball past a diving Kasey Davenport for her fourth goal of the year. The Patriots were able to get the equalizer in the 23rd minute. L.J. Williams dribbled up the middle and found Rachel Wiggins on the right wing. The senior from Acworth, Ga. blasted the ball past E.J. Goldman to make it 1-1. The goal allowed Wiggins to take sole possession of 9th place on Mason's all-time points list. It was Wiggins' second goal of the year.
The Patriots took their first lead of the night just before the half. In the 45th minute, Kelly Keelan took a deep pass from Hannah Sklar on the back line and crossed the ball deep into the left side of the box. Theresa DeLucca was there to punch the ball into the net making it 2-1. It was DeLucca's first career goal and Sklar's first career assist.
Just six minutes into the second half, the Blue Hens were able to tie the contest at 2-2. Emily Sammis found herself deep on the left side and she crossed through the box, past a diving Davenport to Kendall Lytwynec who put the ball into the open net. It was Lytwynec's second goal of the year.
The match seemed destined for overtime but Amy Pickard changed that in the final minute when she found herself all alone behind the Mason defense. She held the ball long enough to force Davenport to commit and she put the ball into the open net for the Delaware win.
Mason had a 10-5 edge in shots on goal and a 22-12 edge in shots. Mason also had nine corner kicks to Delaware's three. Mason will return to action on Sunday when the Patriots host Drexel at 1 p.m. Delaware will play at Towson on Sunday.
