Fairfax, Va - Mason's women's basketball team dropped a 67-47 decision to Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association match-up at the Bob Carpenter Center Sunday afternoon. With this loss, Mason falls to 8-11 on the year (2-7 CAA), while UD improves to 17-3 (8-1).
Mason pulled within one at the 18:32 mark after junior forward Moni Akintunde (Laurel, Md.) netted a lay-up to put the score at 6-5. Junior guard Casey Quigley (Springfield, Va.) sank one from beyond the arc, which dwindled UD's lead to just five (18-13) about eight minutes into the game, which was the closest the Patriots would get to the Blue Hens in the closing minutes of the half. UD had its largest lead of the stanza (17) at the 4:09 mark (32-15) and went into the break with a 36-23 advantage.
UD netted a field goal in the opening seconds of the second half, but Mason did not let them score another basket from the field until Melissa Czorniewy made a jumper at the 10:27 mark. Sophomore forward Whitney Ward (Columbia, Md.) made both of her attempts at the line at 5:37 (55-39) and Akintunde, who ended with 12 points on the night for her tenth double figure point total showing of the season, put Mason's point total to 41 with just over four minutes remaining. Senior forward Tracy Ann Holness (Brooklyn, N.Y.) sank her 79th career trifecta (3:00), which had the scoreboard reading 63-45, and Ward scored Mason's final two points of the afternoon as she sank both tries at the charity stripe with 30 seconds left in the game.
Tyresa Smith sank a game-high 15 points for the Blue Hens, while Chrissy Fisher added 13 and pulled down a game-best nine boards.
Mason shot 31 percent from the field (15-of-50), while the Blue Hens made 22 of their 45 attempts on the afternoon (49 percent). Free throws were fairly even on the day as Mason shot 80 percent to UD s 83, but the Blue Hens did have a 39-23 advantage on the boards.
