Bronx, N.Y.- George Mason University's women's basketball team ended its six-day road trip with a 59-42 win over Fordham University Tuesday afternoon at Rose Hill Gym in New York. With this victory, Mason improves to 6-4 on the year, while the Rams fall to 2-11.
Down by two with just over eight minutes remaining in the half, the Patriots went on a 15-0 run to give Mason a 26-13 lead with 44 seconds left. In that time span, junior guard Casey Quigley (Springfield, Va.) sank back-to-back 3-pointers and also made both of her attempts at the line. Fordham was able to get a basket in the final seconds, but Mason went into the break with a 10-point advantage, 26-16.
Junior forward Moni Akintunde (Laurel, Md.) scored 11 of her 15 points in the second stanza, which included her second career 3-pointer. Akintunde tied Fordham's Lisa Carrol in point total, while Quigley and junior guard Lateisha Wade (Willingboro, N.J.) each added 13 points for the Patriots.
Mason outshot the Rams, 43 percent to 37, and also had a 38-19 advantage on the boards. The Patriots had 13 second chance points, while Fordham had none and the Patriots' bench scored 21 points to the Rams' nine.
The 17-point win ties a season-high point differential for the Patriots as Mason defeated Siena by a score of 61-44 on Dec. 2 at the Patriot Center.
Mason next hosts UNC Wilmington on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. for the Patriots first game back on their home court since Dec. 20.
