Track and Field Completes Second Day at Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. - George Mason's track and field teams completed the second and final day of competition at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Both the men's and women's teams received stellar individual performances on the final day of the meet. Sophomore Murielle Ahoure tied George Mason's school record and set a new Rector Field House record in the 55-meter dash, while the men's team qualified for the IC4A Championships in three events.

In the 800-meter run, freshman Michael Pachella finished in fourth place with a time of 1:53.88 for the first IC4A-qualifying time of his career in an individual event.

Junior Michael Wade also reached the IC4A qualifying mark in the long jump, finishing in sixth place with a leap of 7.07 meters (23 ft. 2.5 in.).

Also qualifying for the IC4A Championships was George Mason's 4x800-meter relay team of junior Kris Cruz, freshman Anthony LaMastro, junior Ryan Davis and junior John Crain. The team finished third, crossing the finish line in 7:50.24. Georgetown (7:41.85) and James Madison (7:48.37) finished first and second in the event.

Ahoure continued to lower her time in the 55-meter dash with each successive round of the 55-meter dash. In yesterday's preliminary and semifinal rounds, the sophomore finished with times of 6.92 seconds and 6.85 seconds. In Saturday's finals of the event, Ahoure crossed the finish line first with a time of 6.84 seconds, tying George Mason's school record set by Sherri' Funn in 1982. The time also set a new facility record at Virginia Tech's Rector Field House.

That wasn't the Bristow, Va. natives only highlight of the afternoon; however, as she also finished third in the 200-meter dash, behind Charlotte's Shareese Woods and South Carolina's Natasha Hastings. Her time of 24.19 seconds qualified her for the ECAC Championships in the event.

Sophomore Ryann Hendricks also qualified for the ECAC Championships in the long jump, recording a mark of 5.72 meters (18 ft. 9.25 in.). She placed seventh in the event.

George Mason's men's team will compete at the Penn State National Open next Saturday, while the women's team will take the weekend off before returning to competition on Jan. 27 at the Patriot Games.
