Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's women's basketball team (7-8, 1-4 CAA) fell to Georgia State (10-6, 2-3) in a Colonial Athletic Association match-up Sunday afternoon at the Patriot Center by a score of 70-57.
After being down by as much as 13 in the first stanza (13-18), the Patriots started off the second half scoring 6-of-8 from the field, including two 3-pointers, to cut the deficit to four points (38-34) at the 15:07 mark. Mason took its first lead of the game about six minutes into the second as sophomore center Jessica Smith (Dartmouth, Mass.) made a lay-up off of a pass from junior guard Casey Quigley (Springfield, Va.), who scored a team second-best 16 points, to put the score at 39-38.
Mason kept Georgia State scoreless for the first seven minutes into the second as freshman forward Danyiell McKeller scored a 2-pointer to put the score at 41-39 in favor of GSU. The Panthers matched their largest lead of the contest at 19 at the 2:37 mark after freshman guard Tabitha David made one of GSU's treys on the afternoon to have the scoreboard read 68-49. Quigley netted two of her four trifectas in the closing minutes to cut GSU's lead, but the Panthers held on to win by a score of 70-57.
Mason junior forward Moni Akintunde (Laurel, Md.) tallied her third-straight double-double to push her career total to 13. Akintunde scored a team third-best 12 points after shooting 2-of-9 from the field and 8-of-14 from the charity stripe and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Senior forward Tracy Ann Holness (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all scorers with 19 points as she shot 6-of-13 on the night and had a flawless showing at the line (5-of-5).
GSU freshman forward RaShay Rawls poured in a career-high 12 points, while David (18), sophomore guard Brittany Holins (10) and senior guard Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (14) each scored in double figures for the Panthers. Sophomore center Marcquitta Head pulled down a game-high 13 caroms and added seven points for GSU.
The Patriots shot 34 percent from the field (17-of-50), while GSU shot 25-of-59 on the afternoon and the Panthers outrebounded Mason, 42-34.
Mason will return to action on Jan. 18 when the Patriots host Old Dominion at the Patriot Center (7 p.m.).
