Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's women's basketball team (7-7, 1-4 CAA) dropped a 68-38 decision in a Colonial Athletic Association match-up against James Madison (12-2, 4-0) Thursday evening at the Patriot Center.
Junior forward Moni Akintunde (Laurel, Md.) collected her second-straight double-double to push her career total to 12 as she netted 12 points and matched a game-high 11 boards against the Dukes.
Mason's only lead of the game came after Akintunde scored the first basket of the contest at the 18:55 mark (2-0). JMU's largest lead of the first stanza came at the break as the Dukes led by 25 (39-14).
Mason held JMU without a field goal in the final 5:49 of the game and the only two points scored by the Dukes came at the line. In this time span, the Patriots scored eight points, six of which were at the charity stripe.
JMU senior center Meredith Alexis tallied her 53rd career double-double as she matched game-highs in points and rebounds with 13 and 11, respectively. Junior guard Tamera Young scored 13, while senior guards Shirley McCall and Lesley Dickinson each added 12 for JMU.
The Patriots shot 20 percent from the field (9-of-46), while JMU shot 25-of-54 on the night. The Dukes won the battle of the boards, 46-31, but the Patriots garnered a 77 percent showing at the line to JMU's 48 percent.
Mason will return to action on Jan. 14 when the Patriots host Georgia State at the Patriot Center (2 p.m.).
