Box Score
Wilmington, N.C.--George Mason University's men's soccer team pushed its win streak to six Friday night as the Patriots (7-2, 3-0 CAA) claimed a 3-0 victory over UNC Wilmington (5-4-1, 0-3) on the Seahawks' home field. The Patriots now have six shutouts on the year, all with freshman Sean Kelley (Lexington, Ky.) in the net.
The scoring was opened up in the 21st minute, but it was credited as an own goal as a low cross inside the box from sophomore Jonathan Borrajo (Clifton, N.J.) was deflected by UNCW's Kevin Weis into the net.
In the 43rd minute, senior midfielder Francis McCardle (Fairfax, Va.) accepted a pass from the left side and headed it down, but Brad Knighton saved that try. Freshman Rich Stone (MF; Mullica Hill, N.J.) was there for the rebound and knocked it in for his first collegiate goal, which put the Patriots up by two.
About 10 minutes later, sophomore Chris Carroll (MF; Annandale, Va.) slipped the ball to junior defender Adam Lobene (Rochester, N.Y.), who then dribbled it up and as Knighton came out to try and save the try, Lobene laid it across to senior midfielder Josh Fleming (Clifton, Va.). Fleming then tapped the ball into the open net on the right side for his first goal of the season and Mason's final goal of the night.
Kelley tallied four saves in 90 minutes of work, while Knighton collected one on the night. The Patriots were edged out in the shots category by the Seahwaks, 8-7, while Mason had a slight advantage in corner kicks, 4-3.
Mason was without two of its starting forwards as freshman Irvin Martinez (Woodbridge, Va.) and junior Dan Ames (Livonia, N.Y.) did not make the trip due to injuries.
The Patriots will return to action when they face Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga. on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.
