Patriots Crowned Champions of the Brion's Grille Patriot Invitational Tournament

FAIRFAX, Va. - At the conclusion of the second and final day of action at the Brion's Grille Patriot Invitational Tournament at John Linn Memorial Gym, George Mason was crowned the champion, finishing with a 2-1 record in three matches.

The Patriots defeated both Central Michigan and Campbell in three games before falling to Lamar in the final match of the tournament to finish in a three-way tie for first place based on record. Lamar and Central Michigan also went 2-1 at the tournament. To break the tie, game-winning percentage was used, and Mason won the title based on their .700 winning percentage, taking seven out of 10 games at the tournament. Lamar finished second, winning eight out of 13 games (.615), while Central Michigan finished third, winning six out of 11 games (.545). Campbell finished last with an 0-3 record in tournament play.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the head coaches selected a 2006 Brion's Grille Patriot Invitational All-Tournament Team. Three Patriots were selected to the team - freshman setter Katie Corcoran, junior outside hitter Jaqueline Kohler and senior middle blocker Chantal Bodkin-Clarke. They were joined on the team by Lamar's Buchi Okoh and Molli Abel, Central Michigan's Courtney Kersten and Sarah Warner, and Campbell's Melissa Harvey. Okoh was named the MVP of the tournament for her outstanding play throughout.

The three Patriots named to the team all put up big numbers during all three matches. Corcoran finished with a total of 115 assists and 33 digs, Kohler tallied 39 kills and 32 digs, and Bodkin-Clarke hit .595 with 23 kills and 20 total blocks.

Fresh off their tournament championship, the Patriots now head into conference play, with their Colonial Athletic Association opener scheduled for Friday, Sept. 8 at Delaware at 7 p.m.
