The George Mason women's soccer team played its final non-conference match of the season on Sunday night as the Patriots hosted the University of Maryland in front of 615 fans. The home team was unable to come away with a win as the Terrapins downed Mason, 1-0 at George Mason Stadium.
The Patriots (3-4-1) were shutout for the third straight game as Nikki Resnick stopped all five Mason shots on goal. Mason had several strong scoring opportunities in the second half but none found the back of the net. The best came in the 86th minute when three different players took shots from within 8 yards and all three were blocked by Maryland (4-3-1) defenders.
Maryland's goal came in the 67th minute. Kaila Sciascia sent a long pass into the box to Sarah Sample on the left side. Mason goal keeper Kasey Davenport got in position to stop a Sample shot, but she instead headed the ball to a streaking Kelly Rozumalski who one-timed the ball in the air with her right foot past Davenport.
The two teams entered the match with identical 3-3-1 records, and they played even until Rozumalski's goal. Even after that score, the two teams appeared equally matched on the field, but Mason's scoring chances couldn't get past the Terrapins' defense.
The Patriots were whistled for nine fouls in the match to Maryland's four while the Terrapins were called for five offsides to Mason's one. The teams were nearly even in shots, with Maryland holding a 19-16 edge, but shots on goal was heavily in Maryland's favor, 9-5. Davenport finished the game with eight saves.
The Patriots will return to action on Friday in their conference opener as they take on Northeastern in Boston at 7 p.m.
