Box Score

New Haven, Conn.--George Mason University's men's soccer team (3-2-0) claimed the Yale Classic title Sunday afternoon after defeating Darmouth (1-1-2) by a score of 1-0 at Reese Stadium in New Haven, Conn. The Patriots went 2-0 at the tournament after claiming a 1-0 overtime victory against host-school, Yale, on Sept. 8.

In the 33rd minute of play, sophomore forward Dan Ames (Livonia, N.Y.) was tripped inside the box, which led to a penalty kick by junior Adam Lobene (Rochester, N.Y.). Lobene outsmarted Dartmouth's goalie, Rowan Anders, and chipped it in the left corner of the net to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead and the eventual game-winning goal. This marks Lobene's first career goal in a Mason uniform.

Senior defender Jacob Weitz (Lovettesville, Va.) almost added to Mason's lead as he took a shot from about 25 yards out in the 38th minute, but Anders tipped it over the crossbar for one of his two saves of the afternoon.

Lobene tallied another shot on goal with about three minutes remaining in the first half as he accepted a pass from senior midfielder Francis McCardle (Fairfax, Va.), but the shot went high.

Freshman midfielder Irvin Martinez (Woodbrige, Va.), who was named to the all-tournament team, took a direct kick from about 20 yards out after being fouled in the 70th minute, but it went wide to the left as an outstretched Anders swatted it away.

In the 81st minute, Dartmouth junior midfielder Nick Christman took a direct hit from 15 yards out, but a line of Mason defenders blocked the shot to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Patriots.

Most valuable player of the Yale Classic, freshman goalkeeper Sean Kelley (Lexington, Ky.), intercepted a corner kick by the Big Green's freshman midfielder Daniel Keat with under five minutes remaining in the contest to keep the lead for Mason.

Senior defender Fabien Lewis (Fyzabad, Trinidad) and sophomore midfielder Chris Carroll (Annandale, Va.) were also named to the 2006 Yale Classic All-Tournament team.

The Patriots will return to action when they face George Washington on the Colonials' home field on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
