George Mason opened up the second day of action at The D.C. Volleyball Challenge with its first loss of the young season, a 3-1 (29-31, 30-24, 15-30, 27-30) defeat at the hands of the Georgetown Hoyas at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center on the campus of George Washington in Washington, D.C.
The Patriots had a superb hitting effort in their only win of the match, hitting .351 as a team in downing the Hoyas 30-24 in the second game. Despite only winning the second game, Mason posted a better hitting percentage than Georgetown in all but one game, a 30-15 loss in the third game.
In addition to outhitting the Hoyas .181 to .145 in the match, George Mason led Georgetown in both assists (49-41) and team blocks (11.0 to 3.0). However, the Hoyas serving was outstanding throughout the match, with 13 aces compared to only three for the Patriots. Junior outside hitter Katie Nulty had a match-high five to lead the way for Georgetown. The Hoyas also had more digs than the Patriots (69-62) with sophomore setter Caitlin Boland leading all players with 19.
For the second consecutive match, junior outside hitter Jaqueline Kohler led the Patriots in kills with 19. She had the same number of kills in Mason's season-opening victory over American last night. Freshman setter Katie Corcoran recorded her second-straight double-double with a team-high 34 assists to go along with 10 digs.
Both team's records now stand at 1-1 on the season. With the loss, Mason drops to 10-13 in the all-time series with Georgetown.
The Patriots play their second match of the day at 7 p.m. against host George Washington. George Mason has a 7-16 record in the all-time series against George Washington.
The Colonials defeated Georgetown 3-1 last night in their only match of the season thus far. Other matches taking place at the tournament on Saturday include George Washington taking on American at 1 p.m. and American facing Georgetown at 5 p.m.
