Burik and Newcomb Named to the EIVA All-Academic Team

FAIRFAX, Va. - Two George Mason men's volleyball players were honored by the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association on Wednesday afternoon for their outstanding work in the classroom. Junior Mark Burik and redshirt senior Bryan Newcomb were both selected to the 2006 EIVA All-Academic Team.

Burik, a former three-sport star at St. Francis Prep in Glendale, N.Y., has compiled a 3.73 GPA majoring in Exercise Science. Newcomb, a graduate of Atlee High School in Mechanicsville, Va. who transferred to George Mason from the University of Virginia, boasted the highest GPA on the team, with a sparkling 4.0, while majoring in Biology.

Three criteria must be met for inclusion on the team. The student-athlete must not be a freshman, must have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher and must have participated in at least 60 percent of their team's games played.

Travis Fox (St. Francis, 3.859 GPA), John Freese (Harvard, 3.551 GPA), Adam Holdredge (East Stroudsberg, 3.964 GPA), Marc Horowitz (NYU, 3.510 GPA), Leonardo Paludo (NJIT, 3.667 GPA), Matt Proper (Penn State, 3.50 GPA), David Tener (NYU, 3.757 GPA), Greg Wagner (NJIT, 3.767 GPA) and Eduardo Welter (NJIT, 3.808 GPA) round out the 2006 EIVA All-Academic Team.
