FAIRFAX, Va. - No. 15 George Mason downed New York University in four games in EIVA Tait Division action at John Linn Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday. With the win the Patriots improve to 15-3 on the season and 5-1 in conference matches, while the Violets drop to 6-9 overall and 0-8 in conference play.

After dropping the first game 30-28, Mason took the final three games 30-24, 30-21 and 30-25 to sweep the season series against New York University. The Patriots also defeated the Violets on Feb. 18 at Coles Sports Center in New York City in four games. In that match, Mason tied the sixth-best single-match hitting percentage in school history with a mark of .510.

This time around, the Patriots didn't put on a record-setting performance, but still posted a hitting percentage of .318 as a team, compared to the Violets paltry .164 hitting percentage. Redshirt senior opposite hitter Shaun Powell led the attack, with a match-high 21 kills on 42 attempts, in addition to three aces. Senior middle blocker Matt Steinfurth and freshman outside hitter Kyle Gramit also posted double-digit kill totals in the win, with Steinfurth finishing with 12 and Gramit posting 11, along with eight block assists. Steinfurth had two solo blocks and six block assists in the match. Redshirt senior setter Bryan Newcomb dished out a match-high 45 assists.

Junior Macnair Sillick paced the Violets with 18 kills, while senior Marc Horowitz led the team in assists with 36.

The Patriots travel to the West Coast for their next match, against the University of California - San Diego on March 15 at 10 p.m. eastern time.
