Senior catcher Robby Jacobson doubled inside the third base bag to drive in two runs and break a 6-6 deadlock in the eighth inning as George Mason halted a six-game losing streak on Saturday with a 13-6 win over UNC Wilmington at Spuhler Field in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action. The Patriots sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning and plated seven runs.
Mason improved to 8-13 and 3-5 in the CAA. The Seahawks, meanwhile, fall to 15-6 and 3-2. The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
Senior third baseman Matt York, who entered the game hitting .179, went 4-5 with two runs batted in and scored twice. Senior second baseman Tyler Youngs finished 2-4 with two RBI. Jordan Flasher (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Patriots.
Freshman second baseman Steve Halford topped the Seahawks at the plate with a pair of hits as UNCW collected just seven hits on the afternoon. Senior Thomas Benton (3-3) suffered the loss for the Seahawks allowing nine runs on 11 hits while striking out nine in a career-long 7 1/3 innings.
Mason grabbed a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Benton retired the first two batters before plunking Jacobsen with a 1-2 breaking ball. York followed with a bloop single to right that bounced past a diving Hatcher allowing Jacobsen to circle the bases with the first run. Sophomore first baseman Chris Romanow drew a walk to put runners at first and second for freshman Ryan Uphouse, who doubled inside the third base bag to plate both runners.
A fielder's choice by freshman outfielder Spencer Wiggins extended the lead to 4-0 after four innings. Youngs worked a 1-out walk and moved around to third on Weiss' hit-and-run single through the right side.
UNCW plated three runs with two out in the top of the fifth to move to within 4-3, but Mason fired back with two more in the bottom of the frame to push its lead to 6-3.
Senior Lee McLean slammed a two-run pinch hit homer in the top of the eighth to even the score at 6-6 as UNCW erased a three run deficit. Senior third baseman Matt Poulk homered to lead off the inning for the Seahawks.
In the Mason eighth inning, Youngs added a two-run bases loaded single up the middle as the Patriots roughed up three Seahawk relievers.
