Fairfax, Va - The George Mason Patriots (8-13, 4-8 CAA) faced tough competition tonight, falling to the top-seeded Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion by a score of 81-33 in a Colonial Athletic Association match-up at the Patriot Center. ODU ran its win-streak to eleven consecutive games, while Mason had a three-game winning-streak snapped.
ODU (13-7, 10-0) got off to a fast start, scoring the first four points of the game, before the Patriots responded with a 3-pointer by freshman guard Scarlett Williams (Fairfax, Va.). Add to that a jumper by sophomore forward Moni Akintunde (Laurel, Md.), and it gave Mason a 5-4 lead for the Patriots' only lead on the night.
The Lady Monarchs would extend their lead and take control of the first half with a 17-4 run over the next nine minutes and 15 seconds to put the score at 28-14. Old Dominion would then end the half on a 7-0 run to take a 38-17 lead into the break. Mason Senior guard Jen Daniels (Brigantine, N.J.) scored seven of her team-high 10 points in the first 20 minutes.
ODU scored 19 unanswered points in a 10-minute span in the second stanza to give the Lady Monarchs a 79-30 lead at the 1:40 mark. Sophomore guard Casey Quigley (Springfield, Va.) netted the Patriots' final basket of the evening as she sank a 3-pointer with one minute remaining, which was answered with a layup by ODU's Angela Brown to put the final score at 81-33.
ODU's T.J. Jordan led all scorers with 23 points, including matching a career-high seven 3-pointers, while senior guard Lawona Davis added 14 points and nine rebounds in the Lady Monarchs win.
The Patriots take to the road for their next game on Sunday, a 1 p.m. tilt against the Northeastern Huskies at Solomon Court in Boston, Mass.
