"Welcome to George Mason."

Those four words, uttered by Mason head men's basketball coach Jim Larranaga, perfectly summed up Dre Smith's performance on Monday night against Florida International. The sophomore transfer from Cochise Community College scored a game-high 20 points making 8 of 14 shots including 3 of 8 from 3-point range as Mason easily dispatched of the Golden Panthers, 65-39 in front of 4,310 fans at the Patriot Center.

Smith entered the game having not scored a point in three previous appearances this season. On Monday, Smith made his first collegiate basket on a fastbreak layup off a long rebound. Less than two minutes later, he drained a 3-pointer and he hit another from long range just seconds before the half. He added 12 more points in the second half. He was the only Mason player to reach double figures.

The Patriots (3-2) trailed early, falling behind 7-6 with 14:33 to play. Mason then went on a 24-5 run that put the Patriots ahead 30-12. Mason led by 10 or more points the rest of the way. The critical stretch in that run was a span of 7:47 during which FIU was held scoreless.

The Golden Panthers (3-3) pulled to within 12 early in the second half but Mason came back with a 12-0 run that put the lead to better than 20. It never again got below that point.

All 13 Mason players took the floor and 10 of them scored. Darryl Monroe came off the bench to score nine points with eight rebounds. Gabe Norwood added seven points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals while Will Thomas had eight points, six rebounds and two assists without a turnover. John Vaughan scored five points with a rebound, two steals and two assists before leaving the game early in the second half with a twisted ankle. He was kept out of the game for precautionary reasons.

In the history of George Mason basketball, the Patriots have held the opposition to fewer than 50 points on 29 occasions. They have done so twice this season in five contests and they did so seven times last year.

Mason will take the court next on Sunday when they take on Bucknell at 1:30 p.m. at the BB&T Classic. This will be Mason's first appearance at the Verizon Center since beating Connecticut last March to advance to the NCAA Final Four.
