Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's head women's basketball coach Debbie Taneyhill has announced that four student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Patriot basketball squad, beginning with the 2007-08 season. The signees include: Eugenia Broadus (F, 6-1, Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll), Brittany Eley (G, 5-11, Waldorf, Md./West Lake), Tayler Wejnert (G, 5-11, Ramsey, N.J./Academy of Holy Angels) and Brittney Wilkins (F/C, 6-3, Cincinnati, Ohio/Montrose Christian/Louisburg JC).
"This is probably the best recruiting class we have had coming to Mason since the class that included Jen Derevjanik and Vernessa Neamo," stated Taneyhill. "We have two excellent perimeter players, a great swing forward and an All-American post player included in this class and am thrilled to have these student-athletes join Mason's program."
Eugenia Broadus (F, 6-1, Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll)
Eugenia Broadus is attending Archbishop Carroll High School where she averaged 13.0 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per contest during her junior year. Broadus earned All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference honorable mention honors in 2005.
"Eugenia, who plays in a competitive high school league, is a swing forward with outstanding athleticism," said Taneyhill. "Eugenia brings a toughness to the floor that we need, she loves to rebound and also has a great sense for the ball."
Brittany Eley (G, 5-11, Waldorf, Md./West Lake)
Brittany Eley is currently attending West Lake High School where she scored over 950 points prior to her senior season. Eley led West Lake to a regional championship and earned All-Met Honorable Mention honors junior year, as well as being named to the 2006 Southern Maryland All-Extra Team. In addition, for the past two summers, Eley was invited to the adidas High School All-American Camp.
"Brittany is a great scorer and knows how to put up points for her team," commented Taneyhill. "I believe that Brittany has the ability to have an impact on this team immediately, partly because of her knowledge of the game and how she performs on the court."
Tayler Wejnert (G, 5-11, Ramsey, N.J./Academy of Holy Angels)
Tayler Wejnert is a varsity starter at Academy of Holy Angels and has been since her freshman year. Wejnert is a two-time all-county honoree and was named to the All-North Jersey First Team, as well as the All-New Jersey Third Team at the close of her junior year. Wejnert led the North New Jersey Interscholastic League in scoring during her sophomore and junior seasons. In addition, heading into her senior campaign, Wejnert had scored 1,128 career points.
"Tayler is a long rangy guard who can also be a great defender, as well as a rebounder from her position," said Taneyhill. "She is a scorer and we need that scorer's mentality on Mason's team. I am excited to add Tayler and look forward to what she can contribute immediately to our program."
Brittney Wilkins (F/C, 6-3, Cincinnati, Ohio/Montrose Christian/Louisburg JC)
Brittney Wilkins comes to Mason with two years of junior college experience. Wilkins was one of 20 individuals selected as a Junior College All-American and earned Region X Player of the Year honors as a freshman. Wilkins averaged 18.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg during the 2005-06 season and helped lead her team to a 25-2 record, along with an appearance in the regional finals. Wilkins is originally from Cincinnati and played her senior year at Montrose Christian Academy.
"Brittney has played two years of junior college basketball and was recognized as an All-American her first year at Louisburg," commented Taneyhill. "Brittney is skilled and athletic and comes with necessary experience, as well as credentials to be an immediate force in the paint for Mason's team."
