Fairfax, Va.--Sophomore Chris Carroll (Annandale, Va.) scored Mason's game-winning goal to help the Patriots (9-2, 5-0 CAA) extend their win streak to eight with a 1-0 victory over Delaware (4-4-2, 2-3) Friday evening at George Mason Stadium. Mason now has seven shutouts on the year and stands alone a top the Colonial Athletic Association with five wins in the conference.
In the 14th minute, Carroll was all alone at about 25 yards out and fired off a shot, which sailed into the lower left corner for the lone goal of the evening. Carroll ended the night tied with Mason senior midfielder Josh Fleming (Fairfax, Va.) on shots for the evening with five and three of Carroll's were shots on goal.
Mason edged out Delaware on shots, 18-15, and held the Blue Hens to just three in the first half, but UD did have a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks. Mason freshman goalkeeper Sean Kelley (Lexington, Ky.) was in net for all 90 minutes and tallied eight saves on the night, while sophomore Jonathan Curry-Edwards tallied seven saves for Delaware, but allowed one goal. Kelley has been in goal for the Patriots for all seven shutouts.
The last time Mason won eight in a row was 1998 and in that season the Patriots won nine consecutive contests.
The Patriots will return to action when they host Drexel on Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.
