Box Score
Richmond, Va.--With about 30 seconds left in the first half, freshman Richard Edgar (Mechanicsville, Md.) netted Mason's lone goal of the game to help propel the 30th-ranked Patriots (11-3-1, 7-1-1 CAA) to a 1-0 victory over Virginia Commonwealth (4-12-0, 2-7-0) at SportsBackers Stadium in Richmond, Va. Friday evening.
Senior midfielder Francis McCardle (Fairfax, Va.) took a corner kick from the right side in the 44th minute of the contest, which made its way through the box. Edgar then fired a bullet about 15 yards out which sailed past VCU's Andrew Dykstra for the game-winning goal. This marks Edgar's second goal of the season and McCardle now leads the Patriots with three helpers.
Freshman goalkeeper Sean Kelley (Lexington, Ky.) was in net the entire contest for the Patriots and tallied four saves on the night. Dykstra was in net for the Rams and collected one save, but allowed one goal in 90 minutes of action.
Shots were even on the night at seven a piece, but VCU had a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.
This marks Mason's 10th shutout on the year in which the Patriots have either won or tied. In addition, eight of these contests have ended by a score of 1-0.
The Patriots will return to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when the Patriots face James Madison (8-5-2, 3-4-2) at George Mason Stadium. At halftime, the Patriots will honor the first class of the Mason Men's Soccer Hall of Fame.
