Newark, Del.-- George Mason University's women's basketball team came up short against the University of Delaware, 67-47, in a Colonial Athletic Association match-up Friday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del. Mason's overall record now stands at 5-12 (1-7 CAA), while Delaware improves to 14-3 (6-2).

The Blue Hens opened up the first half with a 12-2 run as sophomore forward Jessica Smith (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored Mason's only field goal in the first six minutes. Six of the Patriots last 10 points came from the line and Mason shot 7-of-13 from the charity stripe in the beginning 20 minutes. Sophomore Lateisha Wade (Willingboro, N.J.) netted a team-high eight points after shooting 3-of-6 from the field. Delaware had a 10-point advantage at the break, 35-25.

Junior forward Tracy Ann Holness (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior guard Jen Daniels (Brigantine, N.J.) each netted a 3-pointer in the first four minutes of the second half and Daniels' trey pulled Mason within three which is the closest the Patriots would get to the Blue Hens all evening. Following Daniels' points, Delaware went on to score 15 unanswered points as Mason did not make a basket for the next 10 minutes to give UD a 53-35 advantage. Holness stopped the scoring draught as she banked one in from long range at the 6:30 mark and Wade scored seven of Mason's final nine points.

The Patriots shot just 35 percent on the night, while Delaware was - from the field (46 percent). The Blue Hens had a slight advantage on the boards with 34 to the Patriots' 30, and Mason tallied three blocks, while UD had zero in 40 minutes of play.

Mason will return to action when the Patriots face Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. at 2 p.m. on Jan. 29.
