Fairfax, Va. - The George Mason men's volleyball team easily won its season opener against Lees-McRae three-games-to-zero at the John Linn Memorial Gym. The Patriots won the first game 30-22, the second game 30-16 and the final game 30-24.
Mason recorded a stellar team hitting efficiency of .514 in the match, notching 47 kills against only nine errors. Senior middle blocker Matt Steinfurth recorded a match-high 16 kills and hit .625 on 24 attacks. Newcomer Kyle Gramit, a 6-5 freshman from Naperville, Ill., posted big numbers in his first collegiate match with 11 kills.
Redshirt senior Bryan Newcomb and redshirt sophomore Billy Freesmeier put their teammates in position for the kill all match long. Newcomb recorded 20 assists in the match, only two more than Freesmeier's 18.
GMU travels to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico Wednesday to take on Sagrado at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
