William and Mary senior outside hitter Mandy Mayo led four Tribe players in double digit kills with 19 as W&M hit a blistering .305 for the match as it defeated George Mason 3-1 this evening at William and Mary Hall. Game scores were 30-20, 28-30, 30-26 and 30-24. The College improves to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the CAA, while the Patriots fall to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in the CAA.
Mayo was close to unstoppable, posting a .516 total attack, recording 19 kills on 31 total attacks with just three miscues. She also tallied two digs. Classmate Megan Hector posted 14 kills and seniors Caitlin Geraghty and Kate Woffindin chipped in with 12 apiece.
George Mason was led by Jaqueline Kohler and Niki Bernardes, who both finished with 16 kills as the College held the Patriots to a .160 team attack for the match.
W&M gained early control of the match with a win in game one, as it hit .471 (18 kills, two errors on 34 total attacks) and held Mason to a .143 attack (14 kills, nine errors on 35 total attacks). Mayo recorded eight kills in the frame and Megan Eisenman and Woffindin added eight each. Geraghty, who finished with seven block assists, registered four in the game alone.
The Patriots rallied to win game two and tie the match at one behind a .184 total attack (14 kills, seven errors on 38 total attacks) as Bernardes posted seven kills in the frame. W&M hit just .103 (15 kills, 11 errors on 39 total attacks) as Geraghty paced the offense with five kills and three block assists.
W&M's offense came back to life in the third game to regain the lead in the match. Hector's six kills led an offense that hit .306 in the stanza (17 kills, six errors on 36 total attacks) and an opportunistic Tribe defense held the Patriots to a .077 attack (11 kills, nine errors on 26 total attacks).
The Tribe's offense stayed in high gear as it wrapped up the match with a convincing win in game four. Mayo posted six kills and Hector and Geraghty added three apiece as the College hit .375 in the game (15 kills, three errors on 32 total attacks) and held George Mason to a .219 attack (12 kills, five errors on 32 total attacks).
The Tribe defense recorded 11 total blocks and outdug the Patriots 42-36. Along with Geraghty's seven block assists, Woffindin added four and freshman setter Kim Mount, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week, finished with three to go along with her 53 assists. Tribe libero Kathleen Hawley led all players with 17 digs.
