USA MJNT Falls to 0-2 at U-21 World Championships

VISAKHAPATNAM, India - Thiago Alves scored a match-high 13 points to lead Brazil to a 3-0 win over the USA Men's Junior National Volleyball Team, 3-0, on the second day of the FIVB Men's U-21 World Volleyball Championships at Swarnabharati Stadium on Sunday.
Alves had 12 kills and one service ace in the 25-22, 25-22, 35-33 victory for Brazil, the silver medalists at the 2003 FIVB Men's Junior World Championships.
Silmar Almeida added 11 points on 11 kills while Igor Pinto posted nine points on seven kills, one block and one ace for the Brazilians, who improved to 2-0 in Pool B.
Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Jacob Schkud (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Jacob Wiens (Clovis, Calif.) each scored nine points to lead the United States, which dropped to 0-2 in Pool B.
Jablonsky ripped nine kills while Schkud and Wiens each had seven kills, one block and one ace for Team USA, which will now play Iran (1-1) as pool play continues on Monday, Aug. 8.
Theodore Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) and David Smith (Saugus, Calif.) each chipped in eight points for the Americans, who are making their first appearance at the World Championships since 1981.
Brunner tallied eight kills, while Smith added seven kills and one block.
The 12-team tournament is broken up into two pools. Pool A is made up of host India, Cuba, Korea, Morocco Russia and Serbia and Montenegro. Pool B is composed of Brazil, Germany, Iran, the Netherlands, Tunisia and the USA.
