WASHINGTON -The George Mason women's soccer team defeated American at Reeves Field in Washington, DC. The win is the team's first after losing two matches in Hawaii and improving their record to 1-2-0 on the season.
The match's scoring began when Sarah Fack (Algonquin, Ill/H.D. Jacobs) launched a free kick from 25 yards hitting the Eagles' defensive player, who attempted to head the ball out, but instead knocked it over goaltender Andy Germain.
After half, the Patriots were on the offensive getting numerous breakaway attempts, but were unable to convert because of the Eagles recovering defense. Any momentum the Eagles had ended when Mason's Rachel Wiggins (Acworth, Ga./Darlington) knocked the ball into the back of the net on a corner kick to make the score 2-0 in the 73rd minute. Rachel had two shots on goal for the contest.
The match's final goal came in the 76th minute on a lone run down the left side by Mason's Danielle MacDonald (Burke, Va./Paul VI). Goalkeeper Allison Doyle came out of net and deflected the ball only to have it trickle in behind her. Doyle ended up with nine saves on the day. MacDonald attempted four shots, three on goal for the game.
Offensively, AU had trouble with the George Mason last line and failed to make a quality effort on goal. Olivia Brown played the entire game in the net for Mason made five saves and recorded the shutout. Mason out-shot American 15-7 in a match that saw 21 fouls and two yellow cards handed out.
The Patriots are in action again on Tuesday when Mason takes on St. Joseph's in Mason's home opener. That match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
