RICHMOND, Va. - George Mason shot 34.0 percent from the floor and was 1-for-13 (7.7 percent) from 3-point range against UNC Wilmington as the Patriots fell to the Seahawks 60-47 Saturday evening in the Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinals.
The Seahawks (19-9) advance to Sunday's semifinals, where they will play Virginia Commonwealth. No. 6 seed George Mason finishes its season at 16-13.
Junior guard Lamar Butler (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) and junior forward Jai Lewis (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) each scored nine to lead Mason, which totaled a season-low 47 points.
John Goldsberry and Aaron Coombs scored 14 points each to lead UNCW.
In a low scoring first half that saw the Patriots shoot 27.3 percent from the floor, the third-seeded Seahawks opened the game with a 21-7 run in the first 11 minutes and led 30-20 by halftime.
Mason's shooting woes continued in the second frame; the Patriots could get no closer than eight points, 30-22, just 23 seconds in the second half. UNCW immediately went on a 9-2 run to stake a 39-24 margin with 14:07 left.
A jumper from Patriot junior guard Tony Skinn (Takoma Park, Md./Takoma Acad.), who recorded five points, cut the deficit to 39-30 with 12:42 on the clock. But, an 8-0 Seahawks spurt pushed the advantage to 17, 47-30, at the 9:26 mark and Mason, which was 0-for-8 from beyond the arc in the second period, couldn't get the contest back under double digits.
T.J. Carter added 10 points for the Seahawks, who out rebounded George Mason 38-28. Beckham Wyrick totaled a game-high 10 rebounds.
Mason freshman Will Thomas (Baltimore, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) and John Vaughan (Lanham, Md./Laurel) tied for team-high honors with seven rebounds. Thomas finished with four points, while Vaughan had seven.
Sophomore guard Gabe Norwood (State College, Pa./State College) finished with six points, three rebounds and a game-high three steals. Freshman guard Folarin Campbell (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) had seven points.
