After leading the 13th-ranked George Mason men's volleyball team to a 2-1 mark this past week, Shaun Powell was honored for his strong performances as the junior outside hitter was named the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association's Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Mason, 10-1, defeated University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Friday and Princeton on Saturday before falling to UPR-Mayaguez on Sunday, Mason's first loss of the year. Powell averaged 4.8 kills, .90 digs and 1.30 blocks per game for the week while hitting .344.
On Friday, Powell had 13 kills and five block assists. Saturday, Powell had 11 kills, two service aces, one solo block and three block assists. He finished the week with 24 kills and four block assists in the loss to UPR-Mayaguez.
Despite the loss, Mason did not drop in the AVCA/USA Today poll. Mason remained at 13 for the second straight week.
Powell is currently among the nation's leaders in points per game, kills per game and service aces per game. The Patriots return to action on Wednesday when they take on Juniata, the No. 1 team in NCAA Division III. Mason defeated Juniata, 3-1, earlier this season.
