Series Record
Mason leads the overall series between William & Mary, 43-15. The Patriots have won 10 out of 11 games against the Tribe, including the last seven meetings. The Patriots own a 16-9 mark when playing on the Tribe's home turf, hold a 23-4 advantage in Fairfax and the Patriots also lead the overall series on neutral ground, 4-2.
First Time Around
George Mason University defeated William & Mary by a score of 81-69 on Jan. 9 in Fairfax, Va.
Junior guard Jen Daniels helped Mason with its free throw percentage as she was 15-18 at the line to net a game second-best 17 points, while senior center Julie Flanders collected a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman Casey Quigley started her first collegiate game for the Patriots and poured in 11 points and also amassed a personal-best six steals on the afternoon.
Guard Devin James led the Tribe with 14 points, while Kyle DeHaven dished out a game-high four assists and added 13 points, along with four steals for W&M. Guard Lizzie Schiel also scored in double figures for the Tribe as she poured in 12 points and added three assists.
The Patriots shot 42 percent (21-50) on the afternoon, while William & Mary garnered a shooting percentage of 47 (27-57). Mason were able to capitalize at the charity stripe as the Patriots went 34-46 at the line, while the Tribe was 10-18 on the afternoon.
Last Time On the Court
James Madison converted six of 10 free-throw attempts in the final minute and held on for a 56-52 win over George Mason in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball on Feb. 6 at the JMU Convocation Center.
The game was close throughout, with JMU's biggest lead at seven points (13-6 at 14:01) and Mason's largest at three points (17-14 at 7:55).
JMU led 27-23 at halftime, and in the second period the Dukes led by no more than six points (35-29 at 15:17).
Trailing by five (41-36 at 11:44), Mason reeled off five straight points to tie the game at 41with 10 minutes remaining. The Dukes then went on to outscore Mason 7-2 which gave JMU a five-point lead, 48-43 (6:58).
Mason answered with a 7-2 run in which it held JMU scoreless for more than five minutes. That enabled the Patriots to tie the game at 50 on a three-pointer by junior Jen Daniels with 1:13 to play.
In the final 36 seconds the Patriots turned the ball over twice and had only one other field-goal attempt, a jump shot by senior Julie Flanders that fell short with 16 seconds on the clock. JMU scored six points from free throws, while Mason's only points came off of a jumper by freshman Moni Akintunde with 13 seconds left to go in the game.
Akintunde finished with a team-high 18 points and a personal-best 14 rebounds, while Daniels scored 12 points and Flanders finished with 10 points.
Boards, And More Boards
Freshman forward Moni Akintunde grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds against James Madison on Feb. 6 in Harrisonburg, Va. Akintunde's previous high was 10, which she set in Mason's win at Georgetown on Dec. 8.
William & Mary's Numbers
William & Mary has lost six-straight games as the Tribe hold an overall record of 4-16 and a 2-9 mark in CAA play. The last time W&M won was on Jan. 16 when the Tribe claimed a 62-54 victory over Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond, Va. W&M boasts a home record of 2-6 with one of the wins coming against UNC Wilmington (55-48) on Jan. 6. Kyle DeHaven leads the Tribe in both points per game and rebounds per game with 11.0 and 5.5, respectively.
Freshmen Start
Freshman forward Moni Akintunde started her first collegiate game against James Madison on Feb. 6. Akintunde becomes the second freshman to be in the starting line-up this season as Casey Quigley has started nine contests. Heading into Friday's game, Mason's record with a freshman in the starting lineup is 4-6.
Career Move
Through 74 games in a Mason uniform, Daniels has netted 62 treys and is eight 3-pointers away from moving into the top-10 in the Patriots' career record books. Toni Battle (1987-91) currently sits in 10th as she finished with 70 career baskets from long range.
Eighty or More
Mason's 81 points on Jan. 9 against William & Mary marked the first time since Mar. 13, 2004 in which the Patriots scored 80 or more points. On that day, Mason fell to Old Dominion by a score of 85-81 in the CAA Championship game in Norfolk, Va.
One More
Senior guard Lauren Hediger is one away from tying Tracy Kirk (1993-97) in Mason's career record books in 3-point field goals made. Hediger currently sits in eighth place with 104, while Kirk graduated with 105 and is seventh.
Eight is Great!
The Patriots held Miami to just eight points in the first half on Nov. 30, which is tied for second in the NCAA Division I record books for fewest points scored by one team in a single half. Florida State set the standard as the Seminoles led Savannah State by a score of 54-3 at the break on Nov. 23, 2003.
Playing Professionally
Former Mason standout Jen Derevjanik became just the second Patriot to play in the WNBA as she was on the Connecticut Sun's roster for the 2004 season, which made it to the 2004 WNBA Finals. Another senior from last year's team also extended her playing career as Osato Edobor-Osula is playing with Germany. In addition, Vernessa Neamo (2000-04) plays for the NWBL's Birmingham Power.
Mason Signs Three
Head coach Debbie Taneyhill recently announced that three student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Patriots in the 2005-06 season. The signees include Tammy Myers (G/F, 5-9, Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro), Becky Rautzhan (6-3, C, Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) and Colleen Shumaker (F, 6-1, Haymarket, Va./Home School).
Playing Host
For the first time in school history, George Mason will host the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament which will be held from Mar. 9-12 at the Patriot Center. For the past five years, the tournament has been held in Norfolk, Va. and the closest it has been to Fairfax is when American hosted in 1987.
Home Cookin'
Mason's women's hoops team started playing all of its home games at the Patriot Center since the 1994-95 season. Since then, the Patriots have posted a regular season record of 83-50 (.624) when competing at the PC.
