The George Mason women's volleyball team's 2005 season came to an end on Saturday night when the Patriots traveled to defending CAA champion Towson and was unable to pull off the upset, falling to the Tigers, 30-27, 30-16, 30-27.
It's the second straight year that Mason's season has ended on Towson's floor and the third straight season that one of the schools ended the other's season. In 2003, Mason upset Towson to win the CAA title. In 2004, Towson eliminated Mason from the CAA Tournament in the semifinals.
Niki Bernardes had 14 kills and five digs for Mason while Jaqueline Kohler had 11 kills and Zulma Rojas added 19 digs. But Mason middle hitter Chantal Bodkin-Clarke managed just two kills as the Patriots hit just .112 to Towson's .218. Christina Grempler was nearly unstoppable for Towson as she had 12 kills while hitting .579. Alison Essink added 14 digs for the Tigers. Towson had 10 total team blocks to Mason's four.
The loss signaled the final game for four Mason seniors. Bernardes, Rojas, Julie Flanders and Lindsay Angelo each played their final game for Mason. Flanders had seven kills and three block assists while Angelo, had four kills, six digs and two block assists. For Angelo, those four kills were a season high. A fifth senior, Natalia Porosa, missed the final 15 matches of the season due to injury.
