Fairfax, VA (October 9, 2005)--The George Mason women's soccer set their sites on breaking conference-leading Hofstra's seven-game winning streak, but came up short, losing 3-1 at George Mason Stadium today. Conference-leading Hofstra (8-2-1/5-0) extended their winning streak and remains unbeaten in the CAA. The Patriots fall to 6-7-0, 2-3 in the CAA, with the loss.
The first 20 minutes of the game witnessed the two teams alternating shots, with the Patriots the closest to scoring when Jessica Paris' shot hit the right goal post at the 38th minute. The Pride began to pressure the Mason defense with three straight unanswered shots, and the third was the lucky charm as freshman Edel Malone scored her sixth goal of the season, a 10-yard kick into the right corner past goalkeeper Kasey Davenport. The Pride scored once again before the half in the 37th minute, capitalizing on a Mason foul and free kick. This time Malone kicked the ball into the goal after it rebounded off Davenport.
In the second half, Mason had the first opportunity to score when Nilani Duarte kicked a shot that rebounded off goalkeeper Becky Wachsberger and then missed wide of the net. The Patriots did close the gap to 2-1 when Danielle MacDonald kicked the ball into the far corner of the net at 76:37 after streaking down the left side of the field. It was her fifth goal of the season and was assisted by Jessica Paris. But in the 83rd minute the Pride solidified the margin of victory when Nina Nanavrakis kicked it past Davenport assisted by Amber Albrecht.
Mason attempted 11 shots with a team-high three from Jessica Paris and Danielle MacDonald. Hofstra had 17 shots, three more each period than the Patriots. Hofstra's Malone, who scored two goals, had five attempts as did teammate Chrissy Arnone.
The women are on the road next weekend with conferences game against UNC Wilmington and one of the CAA's newest member schools Georgia State.
