Fairfax, Va.--Just a little over three minutes into overtime, George Mason freshman midfielder Nilani Duarte (Costa Mesa, Calif.) scored the game-winner for the Patriots to help lift Mason's women's soccer team to a 6-5 win over Northeastern Friday evening in a Colonial Athletic Association match-up. With this win, Mason evens its overall record to 6-6 (2-2 CAA), while the Huskies fall to 3-8-1 (0-4 CAA) on the year.
In the 93rd minute, Mason senior defender Kristin Portell (Woodbridge, Va.) took a free kick as she was fouled in the box, but the shot went wide right and hit the post. Duarte then fired a shot off the deflection which sailed into the lower left corner of the net to give Mason the winning goal.
Junior forward Kristin Kowalik opened up the scoring just two minutes into the game for NU and sophomore Laura Salichs (D; Alpharetta, Ga.) went on to answer in the 12th minute as she shot a cannon to the middle of the net from about 30 yards out. Freshman defender Brenna Matthews put the Huskies up by one as she had a header at the goal line off of a pass from Hanna Olsson at the 21:06 mark. But not even 20 seconds later, Mason sophomore forward Rachel Wiggins (Acworth, Ga.) scored as Amy Alecci earned the assist to tie the score once more.
Portell had her first penalty kick in the 35th minute and was successful which evened the score at three a piece. Wiggins went on to net her seventh goal of the season and second of the night as Alecci earned her second assist against NU at the 74:33 mark. Freshman defender Hanna Olsson gave the Huskies a 5-4 lead in the 76th minute off a free kick, but senior midfielder Danielle MacDonald (Burke, Va.) tied the game at the 78:00 mark with help from Wiggins.
Mason head coach Diane Drake split the goalkeeping duties as junior Olivia Brown (Des Moines, Wash.) saw action the first 45 minutes and tallied two saves, while allowing four goals. Sophomore Kasey Davenport (Williamsburg, Va.) came in at the start of the second half and allowed only one goal in almost 49 minutes of play. Junior Mariel Wilner was in the net the entire contest for and collected 14 saves for the Huskies.
This game marked the highest combined point total since Sept. 10, 1995 when the Patriots claimed a 14-0 win at East Carolina and the six goals for Mason ties the highest goal production of the 2005 season.
Mason returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 9 when the Patriots host Hofstra (1 p.m.) at George Mason Stadium.
