The George Mason women's soccer team's hopes for postseason play took a major hit on Thursday night when the Patriots traveled to Old Dominion and suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of the Monarchs.
The two teams entered the match tied for fifth in the CAA with the top six teams making the CAA Tournament. Old Dominion clinched a berth in the tournament with the win while Mason now needs to defeat William & Mary on Saturday to have any shot at the postseason. William & Mary and Old Dominion each have 15 points while Mason has 12. A win would move Mason into a tie for sixth with William & Mary. If Old Dominion defeats Towson and Mason downs The Tribe, Mason likely earns the final seed. But should Mason win and Old Dominion lose, a three-way tie may not work in Mason's favor.
The Patriots (8-10-0, 5-5-0) and Monarchs (11-6-0, 5-5-0) played as even as their tie in the standings would have suggested. For the first 74 minutes, neither team could break through against the other's goalie. Finally at the 74:22 mark, Heather Vaughan scored on an assist from Katie Watson, the only time all night Kasey Davenport was unable to stop an Old Dominion shot on goal. Davenport finished with five saves. Colby Owen stopped all four shots she faced in net for Old Dominion.
Despite being outshot 20-10, Mason had nearly as many shots on goal as Old Dominion, with the Monarchs taking six shots on goal to Mason's five. The teams were also even with three corner kicks each.
Saturday's game at William & Mary *6-4-8, 4-3-3) is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
