George Mason University's women's soccer team (7-8-0/3-4) enters a pivotal stretch with four games remaining in the regular season, including two at home this weekend, that could determine their fate for postseason play in the CAA. Delaware (7-5-2/4-3) comes to Fairfax tonight for a 7 p.m. contest, one game ahead of the Patriots in conference play and Drexel (7-7-1/2-5), which is one game behind Mason, travels to play at George Mason Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Rachel Wiggins and Danielle MacDonald continue to lead the Patriots in scoring. Wiggins has a team-high seven goals and three assists on the season. MacDonald tallied her sixth goal of the season last week at UNC Wilmington, chipping in a ball from 20 yards out. Senior midfielder Amy Alecci scored for the first time this season at the Seahawks, gathering a deflected corner kick and finding the net from 25 yards out. Goalkeeper Olivia Brown has started 11 games and has a 4-3-0 record and Kasey Davenport has played in 11 games, starting four to record a 2-3-0 record.
Senior Day will take place at Sunday's game against Drexel. Mason's four seniors Danielle MacDonald, Amy Sorenson, Kristin Portell and Amy Alecci will play their last regular season game at George Mason Stadium.
The Blue Hens are in a four-way tie for third place in the CAA, after splitting their two games last weekend; losing a 1-0 decision to VCU on Friday, but bouncing back for a 1-0 win over James Madison on Sunday. Senior defender Jennifer Krepps scored the lone goal of the game against JMU on a penalty kick at the 47:14 mark. It was Krepps' first goal of the season and the fourth of her career - all of which have come on penalty kicks. Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Shover made six saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season and the 18th of her career. Shover had two saves in that match and lowered her season GAA to 1.22.
The Dragons split their two CAA games last week, shutting out James Madison 2-0 on Friday before falling 3-0 to first-place VCU on Sunday. Mason will have to get past freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond, who owns six shutouts this season. The six shutouts not only are a Drexel season record, but Bond has already tied the school's career mark in just 14 games. Drexel's seven wins this season are a school record for the program, topping the previous mark of six set in 2001. The Dragons put just two shots on net against VCU and allowed a pair of goals in the first 13:10 of the contest.
