Box Score

Fairfax, Va.(October 21, 2005)--George Mason University's women's soccer team (7-9-0/4-4) went into tonight's game with the prospect of moving up a spot in the CAA standings and into a tie for fourth place with Delaware (8-5-2/5-3), but the Blue Hens scored the only goal of the game in the final minutes to dash that hope.

The Blue Hens goal was scored by Emily Samis, her first goal of the season, off a corner kick by Mary Beth Creed at 88:36. Prior to the goal, both teams had some great opportunities to score, but great saves by both goalies and two balls hitting the post prevented scores. Mason's Nilani Duarte had a shot hit the left goal post just minutes into the second half. Delaware's Mary Beth Creed had an open look at the goal 10-yards out and it looked as if she was going to score when goal keeper Kasey Davenport got in front of the ball and made a great save.

Davenport made six saves on the night, including another great look by Blue Hens Shannon Alger as she tried to send one past her from the right side inside the box with an open lane in the 75th minute. Delaware also missed an opportunity at 85:45 into the game when Mary Beth Creed's shot hit the top post and as the ball bounce back in front of the goal Shannon Alger kicked it over the goal.

Mason was the more aggressive team in the first half, out-shooting the Blue Hens 10-3, but in the second-half the game was played more evenly with a 11-8 shot edge for Delaware. Mason's Jessica Paris had a game-high five shots, two on goal. Rachel Wiggins added four shots, one on goal. Senior Danielle MacDonald's three shot attepts all were on goal. Blue Hens goalkeeper Lindsey Shover made eight saves en route to improving her record to 8-4-2 on the season.

Mason's four seniors Danielle MacDonald, Amy Sorenson, Kristin Portell and Amy Alecci will play their last regular season game at George Mason Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Drexel.
